The "Burma Shaves" of Zambia
According to Harveytile
manufacturers, roofs can be life or death situations. Certainly Job's children found that to be the case. The paralytic lowered to Jesus through the roof by his friends found life.
A number of these billboards are painted throughout Lusaka on wall fences, as they're called. Each will have a different sentiment, each praising the value of having these tiles for your roof. And if it doesn't say Harveytile, it's not a Harveytile.
Other advertisements claim that a roof without Harveytiles is like . . .
. . . a marriage without happiness~it might not work.
. . . farmland without farmers~there isn't any success.
. . . life without friends~it might be boring.
. . . schools without teachers~it just won't work.
. . . a nun without a habit. Harveytiles are habit forming.
. . . a wig without a judge. Don't make the wrong judgement.
. . . Paris without the Eiffel Tower. Stamps authority and are made out of steel. (not sure what this last part means)
. . . a ship without a captain. Without Harveytiles you never loose direction (I don't think that's what they meant; double negatives tend to throw people; or maybe it's because we're a land-locked country)
. . . a mouse without a computer or vice versa.
. . . my mother in law. Stamps authority and made out of steel. (hmm, must mean stands for or means authority?)
. . . being burnt in hell without a Savior~only heaven is covered with Harveytiles.
Some of the Harveytile quotes may be simple and odd, but many of them reflect what Zambians value and respect~farmland, friends, education, happiness, authority, and salvation. In this regard, Harveytiles has been very smart in advertising.
And, any one of these sayings would make a blog. I could discuss what a happy marriage is to Zambians; how valuable friendship is here and what true friendship means; what the community schools are like; what part mothers play in marriages; the judicial system; how going to the hospital may not be a good thing here; or, the ease with which one can talk about Jesus in Zambia. Hmm, I think the writer's block may be coming to an end!
