Missionaries have their feet in two places~their country of residence and their original land. That can make holidays seem very different. But we adapt!
Shops were open for business as usual last Thursday, but only because Thanksgiving isn't celebrated here. However, you will hear Zambians wish you a happy Thanksgiving because they know it's important to you.
Our team gathered to celebrate this day of giving thanks at the Huckabys' home. After singing the doxology and praying, we dived into the abundant food. Some of us had to be rolled out the door!
It was a day for playing Pictionary, too, with the men against the women, boys against the girls. Simple pictures of a truck, nshima, butterfly, church, and earring were drawn, allowing even the youngest to participate. We found out that the less the adults helped the children, the better they did! I won't mention any names, but his initials are Kelly Huckaby.
Thanksgiving was a combined day~celebrating the holiday as well as the missionaries' final gathering with the Hiltys. This Thursday they will depart for the States, where they will
make their home in Illinois. As a team we gave the Hiltys a few gift certificates~we figured they didn't need anymore "stuff" to take home.
As much of life here in Zambia is bittersweet, so was Thanksgiving. We enjoyed being together as teammates, but miss our families and friends in the States. We rejoice with God's plan for the Hiltys' lives, but we will miss them. Our hearts will always be in two places. But, God is enough!
