There have been several firsts this December~our first Christmas in Zambia and our first artificial tree. Having Adam here to decorate the tree makes it more fun. We all decided that the best part of decorating a tree here in Zambia is that it took ten minutes to finish—no lights to test, untangle, and replace! Someone loaned us the tree for the holidays and putting it together was pretty simple. Several of the lower branches were broken off, but it has real pinecones on it!
The night before Adam and I had strung garlands of popcorn and, yes, that’s right, chili peppers. Having no cranberries, we were trying to think of something else that was red. Since we had a bumper crop of chili peppers drying in the pantry, Adam came up with this brilliant idea. We just had to be careful not to rub our eyes!
As Bing Crosby crooned Christmas songs in the background and as we drank homemade eggnog, we hung the few ornaments we’d brought from home. Although we didn’t bring our cat, Molly, we still hung her stocking. It made us think that she was probably enjoying Tracy’s sister’s Christmas tree~sorry, Kathy! The gold and silver ornaments you see on the tree are spray-painted seed pods. I had collected two varieties of pods that had fallen from a couple of trees here in Makeni. The solid pods (one is on the top of the tree) are from the jacaranda tree. The other one is still a mystery as to its origin, but it is my favorite. Our stockings are hung, but not by the chimney with care. Will candles do?
