As we traveled together to class in our car with eight pastors we began talking about minibuses and the words that they put on their rear or front windows. Minibus drivers are notorious for being clever, desperate to make a kwacha, and dishonest. Some are probably genuine Christians and wish to communicate their beliefs. However, many become religious when business is poor and post these "good luck charms" on their buses so they receive a blessing. One of the pastors told me that drivers will initially put some kind of slogan or words on their bus honoring their heroes, but when they are down on their luck, they will plaster Christian messages on their blue and white vehicles. After our forty-five minute commute to school we had compiled quite a list of sayings and slogans, all from minibuses. Here is a partial list below of minibus wisdom!
"Dear Mama" (and, what's the rest of the letter?)
"Nankosha" ('He has strengthened me')
"Black man is always a suspect"
"God's plan"
"Only God knows"
"Nothing but prayer"
"Life is not a race, its' a journey"

Hi Karen,
When we were in Zambia one of our favorites was "Groly to God".
We enjoy keeping up with Zambia through your blog.
Liz for the Steins
