A Special Day
Valentine's Day has never been so much fun. Thirteen couples arrived at Fafa's Restaurant to enjoy a day of food, fun, and focus.
Prepared by Ubi and her chef, the food was absolutely delicious~cuisine that Zambians and Westerners alike would love. Beef, fish, chicken, beans, rice, potatoes, nshima, and salad were piled high on each plate.
Fun involved playing a marriage game, patterned after the Newlywed Game. After the couples answered questions in secret about their spouses, Andy and Beth Rice emceed the game. We were wonderfully surprised at how husbands and wives knew each other. Tracy and I failed miserably, and we've been married 40 years! There was a tie for first prize between the Chilufyas and Putas. The tie-breaker question was, "What would your wife rather have as a gift~
a)luggage b) a cooking spoon, or c) flowers?" Gaston and Alice Puta came in second, winning a 25 kg bag of mealie meal, the staple food here. This left the Chilufyas as first-place winners of an all-expense paid overnight at Ciyanjano, our ministry center. Transport costs and meals, as well as flowers, cookies, and chocolates, were part of the package. I did observe, though, that the Putas were just as excited about their prize as the Chilufyas. Everyone else went home with a 1 kg bag of beans, a much-desired meal among the pastors and their wives.
John Chitambo, an AZ teammate, then shared from Scripture about husbands and wives loving and respecting one another. He shared how he helps his wife Victoria with what is often considered "women's work."
Afterwards Tracy led the couples in a renewal of their marriage vows. As it was 40 years ago, getting the words out at times was difficult.
Following our "I dos," we carved up the beautiful heart-shaped cake made by Beth and me. Decorations left with our guests~Valentine's Day pencils, candy, balloons, and candles.
If I had to assess the day, each of us left content~we'd eaten our fill, we'd laughed, and we remembered our special Valentines!
