Tracy
has wanted a dog for quite some time. He had his wish for a few weeks when a
Pomeranian stray showed up at our door over a year ago. Sadly, this stray loved
his freedom and ran out in front of a car and was killed.
While
that little hairy pooch was with us, our cats were intimidated and ran off.
Oreo, our feral “child”,
disappeared for a week. Molly took to the avocado tree and only came down when
the coast was clear. To consider having another dog took a while for me as I didn’t
want our felines to vamoose, nor did Tracy. If we ever got a dog again, it
would have to be a puppy so our cats could handle it.
Named for his two, hefty, front white paws and also for the wolf in
“Dances With Wolves,” Two Socks entered our world the first part of December. He is part
Jack Russell and part something else~his father was probably a Staffi terrier.
With a sweet disposition and face, he won me over in a short while. However,
his constant need to chew on something tries my ankles and patience. So I made
him a chew toy out of Tracy’s mismatched socks which we call the “cobra.” With
this chain of footwear we play “Kill the Cobra” with Two Socks. As you see he
holds so tenaciously to it that he floats in the air.

Terriers are especially skilled at tearing up snakes, something we have a steady supply of here in Zambia. So, we’re hoping once he’s old enough word will get out in Snakeville that Two Socks is in town.
What we didn’t anticipate, which is even sweeter than Two Socks’ face, is that he and Oreo are becoming friends. Since our third cat Thom died about three years ago, Oreo has been extremely lonesome~he would wander around the yard meowing for Thom. I could mimic Thom’s meow and Oreo would think it was his friend. Oreo now has a friend in Two Socks, an unlikely match. Although TS’s bark can frighten Oreo, the cat will touch noses and snuggle up to TS~such a surprise!
God surprises us in so many ways. Isn’t it amazing that the LORD of the universe would care that Tracy have a dog and Oreo would get a new friend? If He cares about the little things, He REALLY cares about the big stuff!
