Today Tracy’s extended family met together with Kathy’s pastor for the purpose of putting James chapter five into action. Pastor Brandon had called this week asking if he could come to anoint Kathy with oil and pray over her.
As Tracy and I thought about the family we began a grocery list of others who could be anointed. There’s his brother, Stacy, who has suffered life-changing complications from hip surgery; Lori, a sister-in-law, who has battled Lyme’s disease for over 15 months; and Marta, another sister-in-law, who is undergoing radiation for breast cancer. Add to this list Tracy’s own health problems in the last six months of staph and malaria, I think it is safe to say that the Lord’s hand has been heavy upon the Singletons.
After lunch today we gathered around Kathy and Stacy in the living room, the sisters-in-law unable to be with us. To prepare our hearts Pastor Brandon read from several passages of Scriptures, beginning with Philippians 4: 6 which commands us to be free from anxiety. The pastor then anointed Kathy with oil, praying a blessing upon her. Others were invited to pray for her as well. Then he anointed Stacy, with several siblings praying as well. Next, from the example given in Acts 19, anointed handkerchiefs were given to Rick and Cary to carry to their spouses, Lori and Marta.
Pastor Brandon made it very clear that although we were believing God for complete healing and restoration, our primary goal must be that God is glorified. Sounds like good theology to me!
As we wait upon the Lord, please pray that this would be the case, that God would receive all the glory in our suffering.
