The Making of An Insaka--Day 3
The crowning portion of the insaka is the cap which is made of concrete. Unbeknownst to us Mr. Sibanda had misjudged the amount of thatch he needed to finish the roof. To cover this mistake he decided to put a much larger cap on than is pictured. You can see how far down the cap was initially intended to be by the dark spot on the thatch. When we discovered what he was doing we asked him to remove the excess concrete as we wanted a smaller cap. Tracy then drove Mr. Sibanda to the market in Matero where he buys his thatch, while the 
helper tore off the extra. Putting on the additional thatch and concrete took a few more hours than anticipated, but they completed it. At the end of the day we had a gathering place which, Lord willing, is guaranteed for 20 years. If you’re in the area, drop by for a chat and cup of tea!
