Our team met for praise and worship yesterday here in Makeni. Several of our teammates were out of town or sick, so we were a small group. Several girls from the orphanage, Chipo and Gloria, began our time of worship by singing a few songs of praise. After a time of singing, sharing, and praying, we received a good word from the book of I Kings from John Chitembo. He encouraged us from the story of Elijah and the widow to give the “little flour” that we have and see what God does.

Afterwards we celebrated America’s birthday by barbecuing (or braai-ing) and shooting off fireworks. Zambia celebrates its independence on October 24th, so we get two parties a year!
As we filled our plates with traditional picnic fare we sang a rousing "Star Spangled Banner" complete with high notes. Although we had no official parade, children paraded throughout the night, blowing party horns I had brought from the states for this occasion. Our fireworks (which we can buy in grocery stores) consisted of several heavy duty firecrackers and a

fountain which was impressive. The Lord also added His fireworks by revealing an interesting moon to us—it was just a sliver of light on the underneath which we
thought was unusual.
Even though we were draped in blankets and wore jackets, we enjoyed a warm time of fellowship in the Hiltys’ backyard. It was a good time of conversation and laughter.

It sounds fun. Is this your winter? How cold does it get?
