Azungu Go To School

Before we left Matero we surprised the Tholes’ niece, Betty, at the school where she teaches, Hellem Community School. Betty teaches third grade and we found the children to be quite orderly even when she was out of the room. We had especially wanted to visit her classroom because her children didn’t believe that white people were living in her house. I guess we were the “show and tell” for the day!

Grace, the founder and administrator of the school, named the school after her late father. Her father insisted that each of his thirteen children finish their education. Usually the boys in her family were the ones who didn’t want to go to school. If they didn’t go, they didn’t eat. His passion for education inspired her to open this private school after his death. This story and Grace's vision for these children greatly moved us.
