Our Apartment In Makeni

Saturday was bittersweet for us. We moved our belongings from the Tholes’ home to an apartment in Makeni (pictured at the left). Although we are enjoying having our own place, we do miss Lichawa, Mirriam, and the children. We will be in our landlady’s guest apartment while our house is being renovated.

Our landlady, Wenda Dil, is fast becoming a friend and is accommodating many of our remodeling wishes. We couldn’t ask for anyone better. Mrs. Dil moved to Zambia several decades ago from South Africa. Here she is pictured with Bobby, a sweet-natured canine. We couldn’t coax her other dog, Sally, or cats, Tiger and Josephine, to join in the fun.

Our apartment and house are situated on 20 acres with several other houses (including Tim and Andrea Hilty’s), an orphanage, school, clinic, church, carpentry shop, and pig operation. Enclosed within walls and guarded 24/7, Makeni allows me to walk at freedom and is very quiet and idyllic. The abundance and variety of foliage amazes and soothes me. At night we nod off to the sounds of frogs and owls. The second night we were here I thought there was a puppy in the yard. Not so! It was a bat! In the morning we rise to the cooing of doves. Give thanks to God with us for the past month as well as for His provision in Makeni.
