Messin' About On The River

I saw a saying on the wall at Conover Square that read, "Having a place to go to is home". Wind in the Willow's Ratty would be delighted about our home by the river in Oregon, IL. Less than 30 feet from the cabin's deck is the swiftly flowing Rock River, a canoer's dream. That is, if you're paddling downstream!

Owned by friends of ours and graciously at our disposal during our stay in Illinois, the cottage on stilts sleeps eight. And, if you're Zambian, many more than that.

The first night here I captured the moon's reflection on the water. Flying ducks and honking geese are a frequent sight at this water supply. A special treat was watching the Goose Family waddle and drift downstream.

One alarming change to the Rock River is the absence of fish breaking through the water's surface. Apparently since we've been gone an illegal dumping of some toxic substance took place and killed off the river's fish population. Quite sad. And, we were looking forward to catching and eating catfish.

Although it was slower in Zambia, internet was available at our fingertips. Here we travel to town and visit the local cafe in order to go online. So, if our bloggings aren't as regular, or you don't get email responses as swiftly, that's why. Please forgive--TIA--"This Is America"!

Jo,
I have since found out that it only affected the fish below Grand Detour. Still sad, though. It is relaxing, although we've been busy! Hope to see you!
