The Feeding of the Five Thousand~Well, Not Quite!

Instead of spending his money on souvenirs, Adam decided he wanted to host a luncheon this past Saturday for the children from the orphanage. Preparations began with planning the menu of spaghetti, rice & beans, potato salad, coleslaw, onions, bread, cheese curls, eggs, drinks, and watermelon. This past Friday I began cooking with the help of Andrea, our neighbor, friend, and fellow teammate. It didn't look too promising when I began to cook this past Friday as the power was off. After waiting two hours we found out that a breaker had not been reset completely. Phew!

On Saturday Tracy and Adam primarily took care of logistics and set-up for the forty children. One of our shipping crates was turned into a serving table. With a little rearranging Tracy remodeled one of our pallets into a bridge to protect our flower beds.

Saturday I continued to cook, thankful that we had electricity. I have never cooked five packages of spaghetti noodles before at one time. Am I ever glad I brought my big roasting pan! While the rest
of us steered clear, Adam practiced his knife skills on two watermelons.

When all was ready we knew the children were arriving by the sound of their laughter and chatter. While Adam helped the children wash for lunch, Tracy and I taught the children a song our family used to sing before meals. After Tracy prayed, Adam shared a few words of welcome.

Many hands made light work as Wenda and Andrea helped me serve the children. The hard boiled eggs ran out first. Although I had made enough, word had traveled fast that someone was fixing a meal for the children! There was enough spaghetti left for seconds, leaving everyone happy and satisfied. And, true to the Lord's feeding of the 5,000, there were leftovers for Bobby and Sally, the center's watchdogs.

After having their picture taken with Adam individually, the children expressed their thanks for being invited to lunch. I know Adam will miss the children greatly. They will also miss him.
